Today, February, 22nd is National Margarita Day! Whoever decided to dedicate a whole day to the drink is a genius. As if us Texans needed an excuse to consume unhealthy amounts of the tart cocktail. Unfortunately, most working people can’t spend the day sipping on margs on a beach in Mexico, right? Wonder how the margarita came to be? So do we! There isn’t a set-in-stone tale about how, or where, or who concocted the first margarita, but there are a few interesting ones. One of our favorites is the story of the Texas socialite, Margaret “Margarita” Sames. In 1948, Sames was hosting a house party in Acapulco, Mexico for friends including the founder of Hilton Hotels—Nick Hilton. Margaret was said to have mixed up the worlds very first margarita using Cointreau, that night.

Today the refreshing drink is recognized all over the world and in a variety of different ways. From a margarita “on the rocks”—which is served over ice, to a “frozen” margarita—which comes in the form of a frozen slush, the choices are endless.
